Company naming (公司取名, gōngsī qǔmíng) is the Chinese metaphysical discipline of selecting a business, brand, or storefront name through the lens of traditional numerological systems. Where Western branding focuses on memorability, distinctiveness, and trademark law, Chinese company naming adds a deeper layer: the belief that a name is not merely a label but a vessel of energy — a "calling card" that broadcasts a specific vibration into the world every time it is spoken, printed, or read. The name you hang over your door, the name on your business card, the name your customers whisper when they recommend you — in this tradition, all of it carries 气 (qi).

The core framework is 五格剖象法 (Five-Grid / Five-Profile Analysis), a method that converts the stroke counts of each character in your company name into five "grids" — the 天格 (Heaven Grid), 人格 (Personality Grid), 地格 (Foundation Grid), 外格 (External Grid), and 总格 (Total Grid). Each grid yields a number between 1 and 81, and every one of the 81 灵动数 (81 Numeric Potentials) carries a traditional interpretation: some auspicious (such as 13, "Brilliant Bloom," associated with intelligence and foresight), some neutral, and some genuinely ominous. These five grids are further read together as the 三才 (Three Talents) — Heaven, Humanity, and Earth — which are checked against the generating and conquering cycles of the 五行 (Five Elements): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. A name whose grids clash (for example, Metal cutting Wood) is considered to carry internal friction; a name whose grids generate each other smoothly (Wood feeding Fire, Fire producing Earth) is said to carry momentum.
But strokes and numbers are only half the practice. Company naming also weighs the 音 (sound), 形 (form), and 义 (meaning) of each character — its phonetics, its visual balance on a signboard, and its semantic resonance — along with the 五行 of the founder's 八字 (BaZi) and the elemental nature of the industry. A tech startup that burns with innovation belongs to Fire; a real-estate firm needs the stabilizing weight of Earth; a trading house in constant motion suits the flowing character of Water. The best company name, in this view, is one where the founder's inherent strengths, the industry's elemental demands, and the name's numerical energy all point in the same direction.
This is not an obscure custom. Across mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Chinese communities worldwide, company naming sits comfortably alongside conventional branding. Many Hong Kong skyscrapers and public companies have consulted geomancers before finalizing names; countless mainland entrepreneurs spend days — and sometimes thousands of dollars — weighing candidate names before registration. It is a living practice, continuously adapting as the economy evolves, now entering its most interesting chapter with the arrival of AI-assisted analysis.
Whether you treat it as a genuine energetic science, a cultural tradition, or simply a structured way to stress-test a branding decision, company naming offers a rigorous, repeatable framework for one of the most consequential choices a business owner makes. After all, a company name is one of the few assets you will carry for the entire life of the business — and it costs nothing to choose it wisely.
2. The Origins and History of Company Naming
The roots of company naming reach deep into Chinese civilization, long before commerce took its modern form. The philosophical foundation is the Confucian dictum from the Analects (《论语》): "名不正则言不顺" — "If names are not correct, language will not be in accordance with the truth of things" — attributed to Confucius himself in the chapter Zilu (子路). For two and a half millennia, Chinese culture has treated naming as an act of cosmic significance, not mere labeling. By the first century CE, the philosopher Wang Chong (王充) was already documenting in his Lunheng (《论衡》, Discourses Weighed in the Balance) how deeply ordinary people believed names could shape fortune — an early written record of what we would now call name numerology.
The practice evolved through layers of imperial culture. During the Tang and Song dynasties, the elaborate system of 避讳 (name taboos) — rules dictating which characters could never be written, because they belonged to emperors or ancestors — made every educated person acutely conscious that a name was a serious, high-stakes artifact. The monumental 《康熙字典》 (Kangxi Dictionary, 1716) established the canonical stroke counts that today's name numerology still uses as its reference standard, and 许慎's 《说文解字》 (Shuowen Jiezi, 121 CE), the first great Chinese dictionary, gave later practitioners an authoritative map of each character's structure and elemental associations. When a modern naming consultant counts "strokes," they are almost always counting Kangxi strokes — a tradition now three centuries old.
The modern system, however, has a surprisingly recent and specific origin. In 1918, the Japanese numerologist Yataro Kosaki (熊崎健翁, 1880–1955) published Seimeigaku (《姓名学》), the book that systematized 五格剖象法 — converting the ancient intuition that "names matter" into a calculable, repeatable algorithm with fixed grids and a fixed table of 81 numbers. The method swept through Japan, then crossed to Taiwan and Hong Kong in the mid-twentieth century, where it fused with local BaZi (八字) and Feng Shui practice. From the 1980s onward, as mainland China's economy roared back to life, an explosion of entrepreneurship created enormous demand: naming studios opened in every city, and a full generation of founders learned to ask, before registering anything, "What do the strokes say?"
The result is a genuinely hybrid discipline: an ancient Chinese intuition about names and destiny, a Japanese-era algorithm for measuring them, and a modern commercial practice that treats the company name as a strategic asset. Today, company naming has absorbed yet another layer — digital and global. Pinyin strokes, English brand names, domain availability, and trademark clearance have all been folded into the practice, and AI platforms like TripodTerra now make the classical algorithm available to anyone with a phone, in seconds, in both Chinese and English.
3. How Does Company Naming Work? Core Principles
Company naming is not a guessing game; it is a structured, multi-stage analysis. Here is how a serious consultation actually proceeds.
Step 1: Read the founder's 八字 (BaZi). Everything begins with the owner's birth data — year, month, day, and hour — because the name of the company is expected to support the person behind it. From the BaZi chart, the practitioner identifies the 喜用神 (favorable elements) — the Five Elements the chart lacks or needs. A founder born into a blazing Fire-heavy chart may need Water and Metal; someone born in a frozen Water month may need Fire and Wood. The company name should supply, at the level of its characters and numbers, the very elements the founder most needs. This is why the best company naming always starts with 八字解读 — and at TripodTerra, the two services are designed to work together.
Step 2: Map the industry's element. Each line of business is traditionally associated with one of the Five Elements: technology, energy, and entertainment with Fire; finance, precision machinery, and metalwork with Metal; real estate, construction, and agriculture with Earth; education, publishing, and plant-based industries with Wood; and trade, logistics, and hospitality with Water. The name's elemental tone should harmonize with both the founder's needs and the industry's nature — three-way alignment is the gold standard.
Step 3: Count the strokes. Every candidate character is counted using Kangxi Dictionary stroke conventions (traditional-character strokes even when the name will be printed in simplified form — a subtlety that trips up many DIY attempts). In company naming, the brand name is treated as a mini surname-plus-given structure: the first character acts as the "surname," the rest as the "given name."
Step 4: Build the five grids. Let me demonstrate with a fictional example — a logistics startup called 海川 (Hǎichuān). The character 海 (sea) has 10 strokes; 川 (river) has 3. Using the standard formulas for a two-character name:
天格 (Heaven) = first character + 1 = 10 + 1 = 11 — auspicious, a Wood number associated with steady growth.
人格 (Personality) = first + second = 10 + 3 = 13 — auspicious, the celebrated "Brilliant Bloom" number, linked with intelligence and foresight.
地格 (Foundation) = second + 1 = 3 + 1 = 4 — and here is the catch: 4 falls in the semi-ominous column of the classic 81-number table, often read as instability beneath the surface.
Step 5: Check the Three Talents (三才). The grids are read as Heaven (11, Wood) → Humanity (13, Fire) → Earth (4, Fire). Wood feeds Fire, and Fire finds fellowship with Fire — the chain generates, which is good. But that stubborn 地格 4 still nags.
Step 6: Refine. A careful consultant would now propose restructure — and here is a genuinely useful insight from the tradition: three-character names offer better numerical geometry than two-character names. Moving from 海川 to a three-character version such as 海川力 yields 天格 11, 人格 13, 地格 5 (now an auspicious Earth number), 总格 15 (auspicious), and 外格 3 (auspicious) — with the Three Talents flowing Wood → Fire → Earth in a perfect generating chain. Same root characters, materially better numbers.
Step 7: Apply the human filters. Numbers are not the whole game. The consultant then checks sound (clear, pleasant phonetics, no awkward regional pronunciations), form (characters that sit well together visually on a signboard), meaning (a cohesive, positive semantic field), 谐音 (homophones — never pick a name whose casual pronunciation sounds like disaster or bankruptcy), and the elemental clues encoded in character radicals (氵 water radicals, 火 fire radicals, and so on). Finally, the surviving candidates get practical checks: trademark search, domain availability, and whether the name still works internationally — because a name that trips up overseas customers carries friction no number can fix.
That is the complete pipeline: BaZi foundation → industry element → stroke counting → five grids → 81 numbers → three talents → sound, form, meaning → legal reality. Each stage eliminates candidates until only the strongest names remain.
4. What Questions Can Company Naming Answer?
Founders bring strikingly concrete questions to company naming. Here are the most common — each with a realistic miniature example.
1. "Which of these candidate names is best?" The classic question. A founder has shortlisted five names and wants a disciplined comparison. Naming provides it: a scored matrix of grids, numbers, Three Talents, and element fit. Two names might both sound great but one carries a hostile Three-Talent clash while the other flows. Now you have a tiebreaker — and a reason you can explain.
2. "My business is starting flat — is the name part of the problem?" When a company struggles, owners often commission a diagnostic naming review of the existing name. The analysis may reveal a 总格 in an ominous number band or a Three-Talent configuration where the Foundation grid undermines the Personality grid — an "internally fighting" name. The remedy can be a full rename, or a lighter-touch fix: a consumer-facing brand name introduced alongside the legal entity, or simply a modified visual treatment of the characters.
3. "What element should my name lean toward?" A founder whose BaZi shows a shortage of Water asks whether their brand should carry water-radical characters (海, 源, 润, 清). The answer comes from the intersection of their chart and their industry: for a logistics or trading business, Water harmonizes with both — a rare triple win.
4. "Two characters or three?" As the 海川 example shows, this is a real numerical question, not a style preference. Two-character brands have elegant simplicity but lock the 外格 at 1 and constrain the 地格; three-character names unlock a wider range of auspicious configurations. The consultant's recommendation depends on the specific characters you love.
5. "My perfect name is already taken as a domain/trademark." Extremely common — and naming has a traditional answer: structural substitution. You keep the sound and meaning you love while swapping characters to escape the legal block and improve the numbers. 海川 unavailable? 海晟 (10 + 11 strokes) reshapes the grids entirely. The tradition has been doing "rebranding without breaking the brand" for a century.
6. "Should my personal lucky name guide my company name?" The personal name serves the individual; the company name serves the enterprise. They should be compatible but not identical — and the compatibility check (do their elements support each other?) is a standard part of the consultation.
7. "I'm naming a branch, a product line, or a store — does the same system apply?" Yes, with scale adjustments: the industry element shifts, the regional audience changes the homophone check, and a storefront name puts extra weight on visual form — characters that read beautifully on a sign three streets away.
None of this promises that a name alone builds a business — execution, product, and timing matter far more. But naming answers a question founders actually face daily: "I have to choose something — now what?" It converts anxiety into a decision procedure.
5. Company Naming vs Other Metaphysical Tools
TripodTerra offers a family of metaphysical services, and knowing which one you need is half the battle. Company naming sits in a specific niche — and it works best when used with the others.
八字解读 (BaZi Reading) is the diagnostic engine. It maps the founder's elemental makeup, strengths, and life rhythms from birth data — the who, not the what. Company naming is, in a real sense, an application of BaZi to a commercial artifact: it takes the founder's 喜用神 (favorable elements) from the chart and encodes them into a business name. The natural workflow is BaZi first, naming second. If you have never had your own chart read, start with 八字解读 or the full 八字命盘 — the naming consultation will be far more precise with the chart in hand. A founder who skips this step is essentially asking for a custom suit without measurements.
姓名起名 (Personal Naming) is company naming's sibling. Personal naming applies the same Five-Grid machinery to an individual's name at birth or on a name change; company naming applies it to an enterprise. The differences are meaningful: companies are named once for decades, must survive trademark and domain screening, carry the weight of an industry element, and are read by thousands of strangers — so sound and form matter even more than in personal naming. If personal naming is a tailored shirt, company naming is the company uniform.
数字能量 (Number Energy) operates on the raw digits that touch your business daily — phone numbers, hotlines, license plates, pricing, office numbers, account endings. Where company naming derives numbers from characters, the number service starts from digits themselves. The two complement each other beautifully: a 400 hotline, a street address, or a price point chosen with the number service reinforces the energy your company name establishes. Brand identity (name) plus touchpoints (numbers) is the full stack.
The honest rule of thumb: BaZi tells you what you need; company naming embeds it in your identity; number energy polishes every digit customers see. Use them in that order, and each service amplifies the others. And because TripodTerra's services share the same AI engine and the same classical corpus, the analysis across all three stays consistent — the elements your BaZi chart says you need will be the elements your name analysis looks for, which will be the numbers your phone service favors. One coherent system, not three disconnected superstitions.
6. Real-World Case Studies
Case 1: The restaurant founder whose name fought his own chart. A 42-year-old chef in a southern city had run a popular noodle house for six years, always under a name his father had chosen: 焱味 (Yànwèi) — literally "Blazing Flavor," carrying two fire radicals. The business was steady but never scaled; the founder burned out repeatedly, and his health flagged. When he finally commissioned a naming review, his BaZi told a striking story: born in a deep-winter month with an already Fire-heavy chart, his 喜用神 was Water — and his company name was dumping more Fire into an overloaded system. His grids also showed a Three-Talent clash, the Foundation grid cutting against the Personality grid. Rather than discard his father's legacy, the consultant restructured: the legal entity kept its registration, but the street-facing brand became 清源 (Qīngyuán — "Clear Source"), with water-radical characters and a harmonized grid set (天格 11, 人格 13, 地格 5, 总格 15 — the full generating chain). Two years on, the founder reports a steadier operation, a second location, and — just as importantly — a name he feels calm saying. The system's real deliverable wasn't luck; it was alignment, and with it, confidence.
Case 2: The startup founder torn between two names. A first-time founder in the education-tech space had narrowed her brand to 启睿 (Qǐruì — "Awaken Wisdom") or 迅学 (Xùnxué — "Swift Learning"). Both scored well with friends; both had available domains. The naming analysis separated them cleanly. 启睿: 启 (7 strokes) + 睿 (14) → 天格 8, 人格 21 (an auspicious "Bamboo in the Sun" number), 地格 15, 总格 21 — Three Talents flowing Metal → Wood → Earth in a generating pattern, and the elements aligned with the education sector's Wood nature and her chart's need for Wood. 迅学: 迅 (6) + 学 (8) → 人格 14, which sits in the semi-ominous band of the classic table, and a Three-Talent configuration with a cutting relationship. She chose 启睿 — and reports that beyond the numbers, the structured comparison gave her something a coin flip never could: a justifiable reason to stop second-guessing. The company's brand energy, she says, now matches the calm wisdom the name promises.
Case 3: The family business that repaired a name without breaking it. A third-generation hardware manufacturer, founded in the 1980s under a name that tested as 大凶 (majorly ominous) in its 总格, worried that renaming would erase forty years of goodwill. The consultants agreed: don't. Instead, they introduced a new consumer-facing brand — 恒固 (Hénggù — "Everlasting and Solid") — for the retail product line while the legal entity and B2B contracts kept the old name. 恒 (9) + 固 (8) yielded a Total Grid of 17, an auspicious "Breakthrough" number, with Metal-Earth-Metal Three Talents befitting a hardware company. The family kept the legacy, gained a marketable new identity, and the exercise forced a strategic clarity — product-line separation — that helped the business regardless of any metaphysical reading.
These are anonymized composites drawn from real consultation patterns, and none of them claim that a name alone changed fortunes. What naming actually did in each case was force a decision, align identity with strategy, and give the founder a reason to move forward without regret — which, in business, is no small thing.
7. AI-Powered Company Naming vs Traditional Consultation
Traditional company naming is a skilled craft — and a costly one. A serious consultation with a senior practitioner typically costs hundreds to thousands of dollars and runs over days, with the founder's chart read, dozens of candidates generated by hand, and each name checked against stroke tables. It is also, unavoidably, human: excellent for nuance, occasionally inconsistent in method, and sometimes shaped by the consultant's own aesthetic biases.
AI-powered company naming changes the economics and the experience without abandoning the tradition. At TripodTerra, the 公司取名 service encodes the classical algorithm — Kangxi stroke counts, the five grids, the 81-number table, Three-Talent generation and conquering cycles, elemental radicals — so the same rules a master applies are applied instantly, identically, every time. The AI adds what a human table cannot: speed (results in seconds), scale (hundreds of candidate characters cross-checked in one pass), and data-driven breadth (a large corpus of naming conventions across industries and regions). Your founder BaZi chart is woven into the analysis, so the recommendation is personalized rather than generic.
What the AI preserves is the structure of the tradition: it will still tell you that 海川's 地格 4 is a weakness and that the three-character restructure is stronger. What it cannot replace is the human layer of taste — the founder who knows their community, their customers, their aesthetic. The best modern practice is hybrid: use AI to generate and score, then apply your own judgment to the shortlist. The tradition has always held that the name must finally sound like you; AI simply makes sure that when you fall in love with a name, it has already passed every classical gate it can.
8. How to Start Your Company Naming Journey
Getting started takes about ten minutes, and the first step is free.
Prepare your founder details. Have your birth year, month, day, and time handy — the BaZi foundation of the analysis. (If you don't know your birth time, don't worry; the consultation adapts.)
Open the 公司取名 (Company Naming) chat. Describe your industry, your region, your target customers, and any candidate names you already love.
Get your analysis. The AI will assess your founder chart's favorable elements, check your candidates' grids, numbers, and Three Talents, flag homophones and elemental mismatches, and generate fresh alternatives that score higher.
Cross-reference with your chart. For the full picture, run a 八字解读 alongside — the two services share the same foundation, so they speak the same language.
Take the shortlist to the real world. Check trademarks and domains (national trademark offices and WIPO are good starting points), say the names aloud to friends, and choose.
TripodTerra offers a free trial quota for new users, so your first company naming consultation — and even your first BaZi reading — costs nothing. No appointment, no travel, no minimum engagement: bring your industry, your ambitions, and your top three name ideas, and leave with a shortlist that has passed the classical gates.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is company naming just superstition?
It is a cultural tradition with a structured methodology, not a scientific law — and the most useful way to treat it is as a decision-making framework. The Five-Grid system encodes centuries of accumulated cultural intuition about how names feel to speakers of Chinese: characters that clash phonetically, carry unfortunate homophones, or signal elements at odds with your industry genuinely do shape customer perception. You do not have to believe the numbers "cause" outcomes to benefit from a systematic name review — many founders use it exactly the way they use brand audits.
Q2: How is company naming different from personal name naming?
Personal naming serves the individual's chart; company naming serves an enterprise — with extra constraints: industry elements, trademark and domain screening, visual form on signage, and international pronounceability. The machinery (Five Grids, 81 numbers, Three Talents) is shared, which is why 个人起名 and company naming pair so well.
Q3: Does it work for English or international brand names?
Yes, with adaptation. For English names, practitioners typically map the name to pinyin or to its semantic translation, then analyze the Chinese characters those map to — or, for pure English brands, use letter-position numerology and the phonetic feel. The pragmatic view: your international name and your Chinese name are two expressions of one identity, and both deserve review.
Q4: My company already has a name. Is it too late?
Not at all — diagnostic naming reviews are one of the most common requests. If your current name tests poorly, options range from full renaming to light-touch remedies (a consumer-facing brand, a visual restyle, a character substitution that preserves sound and meaning). Most businesses never need a dramatic change.
Q5: How long does a company naming consultation take?
With AI: minutes. A full interactive session — including your BaZi foundation, candidate generation, and refinement — fits comfortably in one conversation at TripodTerra's chat. Traditional human consultations still take days, which is one reason AI has made the practice dramatically more accessible.
Q6: What does it cost?
TripodTerra gives new users a free trial quota, so your first consultation is free. Subsequent usage is covered by the same flexible quota system as the other metaphysical services — no contracts, no hidden fees, pay for what you use.
Q7: Is my business information private?
Your founder birth data and business details are treated as sensitive personal information. TripodTerra's consultations process your data under its privacy policy, and the AI analysis does not share your details with third parties. (And since the analysis is instant, you can also choose to share only what you're comfortable with — e.g., just your industry and candidate names.)
Q8: Can company naming guarantee business success?
No — and anyone who claims it can is selling something other than the tradition. A name is one input among many: product, market, execution, funding, timing. What naming can do is remove one class of doubt, align your identity with your strategy, and give you a decision you can stop revisiting. In our experience, founders value that certainty as much as any number in the table.
