Ask a BaZi reader "what's my element?" and they'll look for one thing first: your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your birth day.
What the Day Master is
A BaZi chart is built from four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem (one of ten) and an Earthly Branch (one of twelve). The ten stems each carry one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — in either yang or yin form:
| Element | Yang stem | Yin stem | |---|---|---| | Wood | 甲 Jia | 乙 Yi | | Fire | 丙 Bing | 丁 Ding | | Earth | 戊 Wu | 己 Ji | | Metal | 庚 Geng | 辛 Xin | | Water | 壬 Ren | 癸 Gui |
Your Day Master is the stem on your day pillar. It represents "you" in the chart — your baseline temperament and how you respond to the world. In classical texts it's called 日元 (the "day origin"), and the entire chart is read relative to it.
How to find yours
You need your birth date and time. A free TripodTerra chart computes all four pillars in seconds from your birthday — including true solar time correction, which matters if you were born near a time-zone boundary. The result will show your Day Master, e.g. 丙火 (Yang Fire) or 癸水 (Yin Water).
What each Day Master leans toward
These are broad-brush tendencies, not verdicts:
- Wood (甲/乙) — grows toward goals; long-term builders. Yang Wood is a tall tree (principled, straight); Yin Wood is a vine (adaptable, persistent).
- Fire (丙/丁) — radiates outward; natural communicators. Yang Fire is the sun (warmth, visibility); Yin Fire is a candle flame (focused, intense).
- Earth (戊/己) — stabilizes; the dependable center. Yang Earth is a mountain (steady, unshakable); Yin Earth is fertile soil (nurturing, receptive).
- Metal (庚/辛) — defines and refines; standards-driven. Yang Metal is forged steel (decisive, cutting); Yin Metal is jewelry (precise, discerning).
- Water (壬/癸) — flows and strategizes. Yang Water is the ocean (big-picture, powerful); Yin Water is mist or rain (subtle, perceptive).
Your element isn't your whole story
Your Day Master is the anchor, but the chart's story comes from how the other stems and branches support or drain it — your 喜用神 (favorable elements) depend on the season you were born in, not just the element itself. A Metal day-master born in autumn is a different person from the same Metal born in spring. Want the full picture?
